Somehow, summer always seems to fly by. One minute you’re enjoying popsicles and pool days, and the next you’re digging through the closet looking for that one school backpack you swore you wouldn’t lose this year. (Don’t worry, you’re never the only one!)
As the new school year begins, there’s more on your mind as a parent than just supplies and schedules. It’s also a great time to check in on your kid’s health to make sure they’re feeling their best, growing strong, and ready to handle everything from learning to lunchboxes.
At Woodstock Pediatric Medicine, we’re here to help make that back-to-school transition a little easier for both you and your child. Here’s what we suggest to start the school year off on a healthy note.
First Things First: Time for That Annual Check-Up
Even if your child seems totally fine, an annual wellness visit is still one of the best ways to make sure everything’s on track and to catch small concerns before they turn into bigger ones.
At your child’s back-to-school check-up, we’ll:
- Measure growth and check vitals
- Do a gentle, full-body exam
- Talk through sleep, nutrition, and daily habits
- Ask how things are going socially and emotionally
- Make sure they’re up to date on required school forms
- Answer all your questions, no matter how small
If your child plays sports, we can take care of their sports physical at the same time, so you don’t have to book a separate visit. Our back-to-school appointments fill up quickly, but it’s never too late to reach out to schedule an annual check-up. We’ll do our best to get a day and time that works best for you and your family.
Keeping Up with Vaccines
We know vaccines can be a hot topic and we’re always happy to talk them through with you. Our job is to help you understand what’s recommended, why it matters, and what’s required for school attendance in Georgia.
Here are the vaccines we commonly check for at school-age visits:
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
- Varicella (chickenpox)
- DTaP and Tdap (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis)
- Polio
- Hepatitis A and B
- Meningococcal and HPV (for middle and high schoolers)
- Flu (seasonal)
If you’re not sure what vaccinations your child has already had, don’t worry. We keep detailed immunization records and will walk you through what’s needed and when during your visit.
Let’s Talk Vision, Hearing, and Focus
Back-to-school season is also a great time to check in on how your child is seeing, hearing, and focusing in class.
Sometimes kids don’t realize they’re struggling with something; they just know they don’t like reading, or they can’t seem to concentrate. In reality, it could be something like nearsightedness, difficulty hearing, or even undiagnosed ADHD.
During their visit, we’ll:
- Do basic vision and hearing screenings
- Ask questions about focus, learning, and school stress
- Talk about any behavioral or attention-related concerns you’ve noticed
- Refer you to specialists if needed. We have a great network of local providers
The goal is always the same: to help your child feel confident and supported, whether they’re in kindergarten or high school.
The Emotional Side of Going Back to School
New routines, new teachers, and changing friendships? It can be a lot for kids to process. If your child is feeling nervous, overwhelmed, or just a little “off” as the school year begins, you’re not alone. That’s normal, and it’s something we’re happy to talk about during their visit.
Some signs your child might need a little extra support:
- Trouble sleeping or eating
- Frequent tummy aches or headaches with no clear cause
- Withdrawn or overly clingy behavior
- Trouble focusing or adjusting to routines
- School refusal or major anxiety
We’re here to listen, to both you and your child, and help you decide if it’s something they’ll grow through, or something that might benefit from a little extra help.
Starting the Year Strong with Healthy Habits
It’s so easy to fall out of healthier routines during the summer (yep, even for us too!). The good news is that it doesn’t take long to reset, and our team can help with that as well.
Here are a few gentle reminders to ease back into healthy routines:
- Start adjusting bedtime and wake-up times a week or two early
- Encourage screen-free evenings to help with winding down
- Make sure your child eats a balanced breakfast before school
- Send them with a refillable water bottle and healthy snacks
- Go over handwashing habits and covering coughs/sneezes
We believe back-to-school season is a fresh start, not just for academics, but also for building lifelong healthy habits.
