As parents, you want the best for your kids, especially when they're not feeling well. At Woodstock Pediatric Medicine, we feel the same way. We're here to reassure, support, and work with you so your child gets care that's thoughtful, timely, and focused on their well-being.
Knowing a bit about how our office operates behind the scenes can help you feel more confident and make your experience a lot smoother. Below, we've put together some helpful tips to make managing your child's healthcare easier and less stressful.
Save Time at Your Visit with CHADIS
Appointments can feel overwhelming, especially when little ones are wiggly, curious, or under the weather. To make check-ins smoother and less stressful, we use CHADIS, a secure online tool that allows you to complete important questionnaires before your child’s appointment.
These are the same forms you’ve always filled out, just a bit easier now. Filling them out at home lets you take your time, skip the clipboard juggling, and helps your provider walk into the room already knowing your child's needs.
CHADIS connects directly with our system, so we can prepare in advance, making the visit more focused, efficient, and all about your kid.
Understanding Our On-Call Service
Life doesn’t stick to office hours, and kids definitely don’t either. That’s why our on-call provider is available after hours and on weekends for urgent issues that can’t safely wait until the next business day. This service gives you quick access to a medical professional when you’re worried and need some guidance.
Good reasons to call our on-call provider:
- High fever in infants under three months
- Trouble breathing or very rapid breathing
- Signs of dehydration (very few wet diapers, no tears, extreme lethargy)
- Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- Possible allergic reactions
- Injuries requiring urgent evaluation
- Sudden behavioral changes or altered consciousness
- Questions about whether your child needs emergency care
Concerns that can usually wait until business hours include:
- Prescription refills
- Referrals
- School or camp forms
- Non-urgent questions about mild symptoms
- Scheduling follow-up visits
- Clarifying instructions from a recent visit
Using on-call services appropriately ensures that families facing true emergencies can reach a provider quickly, while routine needs can be handled through our patient portal or during regular hours.
Why Call Response Times May Vary
When you leave a message on our nurse line, you can rest assured we’ve got it and will follow up. That said, you might notice calls aren’t always returned in the exact order they came in.
Our nursing team sorts calls by medical urgency to keep kids safe. For example, a parent reporting a high fever with uncontrollable vomiting will get a quicker callback than a non-urgent question or refill request, even if that urgent call came in later.
We get that waiting can be stressful, especially when you’re worried about your child. This triage system makes sure kids with potentially serious symptoms get the fastest care possible.
A helpful tip: For routine stuff like prescription refills, our patient portal is often the quickest and easiest option. You’ll get a notification when your request’s been handled, and it helps keep our phone lines open for urgent issues. The portal is also available 24/7 for forms, updating your info, and general questions.
Choosing the Right Level of Care
One of the most common questions we hear is: “Should I call the pediatrician, go to urgent care, or head to the ER?”
Knowing where to go can help you get the right level of care quickly, and avoid unnecessary stress or expenses.
Call or visit your pediatrician for:
- Well-child visits and vaccines
- Colds, ear infections, and mild stomach bugs
- Rashes or minor injuries
- Developmental or behavioral concerns
- Chronic condition management
- Non-urgent concerns during office hours
Urgent care is a good option for:
- Possible fractures or sprains needing X-rays
- Illnesses needing attention when our office is closed
- Cuts that may require stitches (but aren’t severe)
- Moderate fevers in older children
- Minor burns or insect stings
Head to the emergency room for:
- Difficulty breathing or turning blue
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Head injuries with confusion or loss of consciousness
- Seizures
- Severe allergic reactions
- Poison ingestion
- Broken bones with visible deformity
- High fever in infants under three months
- Any condition that feels life-threatening
If you’re unsure, please call us. We’d rather help guide you than have you worry alone or visit the wrong place.
