Bringing your baby to the pediatrician for the first time is a big moment, and we know it can come with all kinds of feelings. Excitement. Nerves. Exhaustion (hello, new parent life!). Maybe even a little uncertainty about what to expect.
We want you to know: you’re not alone, and you’re doing a great job.
At Woodstock Pediatric Medicine, we’re here to walk alongside you from day one. Whether you’re brand-new parents, or just new to our practice, here’s a quick peek at what your child’s first appointment with us will look like and how we’ll help you feel comfortable every step of the way.
From the Moment You Walk In
Our office is designed with families in mind. (Nothing stuffy or intimidating here.) When you arrive, our front desk team will greet you with a smile (and probably ask how your night went, after all, we know sleep is in short supply). We’ll help you get settled, check you in, and walk you through any paperwork if it hasn’t already been completed online.
If your little one is hungry, fussy, or needs a quick diaper change before we get started, it’s never a problem. We totally get it. There’s no “perfect” way to show up, just come as you are.
What Happens During the Visit
This first appointment usually happens a few days after birth, or shortly after you’ve transferred care to our office. It’s a chance for us to get to know your baby and you.
Here’s what we’ll cover in a gentle, low-stress way:
A Conversation About How Things Are Going
We’ll ask about your delivery, how your baby’s feeding, sleeping, and how you’re doing too. You’ll have time to talk, ask questions, and share anything on your mind. You don’t need to come prepared with anything fancy, just tell us what’s been going on.
A Head-to-Toe Exam
We’ll check your baby’s weight, length, reflexes, skin tone, heartbeat, and a few other things to make sure they’re thriving. This is all done gently and with care. We know babies wiggle, squirm, and sometimes cry. That's totally normal and absolutely okay.
Lots of Time for Questions
We expect questions! In fact, we welcome them. Whether you’re wondering how often to feed, why your baby sneezes so much, or if that little rash is something to worry about, we’ll talk it through with patience and zero judgment.
What to Bring With You
You don’t need to bring the whole house, we promise. Just a few helpful things:
- Your ID and insurance card
- Hospital paperwork or discharge summary if you have it
- A diaper bag with the usual supplies
- Feeding supplies (bottle, formula, or anything you need for nursing)
- An extra onesie or two — for baby and maybe for you
- A list of questions if you like (but it’s fine if you forget — we’ll remind you!)
And yes, if you show up with spit-up on your shirt or your socks don’t match, trust us, we don’t even notice. We’ve all been there.
We’re Here for the Long Haul
That first appointment is just the beginning of a relationship we truly value. We want you to feel comfortable coming to us with anything, from the tiny worries to the big milestones.
Over time, we’ll celebrate first words, help you through colds and growing pains, and cheer your child on through every age and stage. Our team at Woodstock Pediatric Medicine doesn’t just want to care for your child, we want to be part of your parenting village.
A Note Just for You, From Our Team
If this is your first baby, you might be feeling unsure or overwhelmed. That’s normal. And if this isn’t your first rodeo, you still might have questions, and that’s normal too.
We want you to feel safe, seen, and supported every time you walk through our doors. Our job isn’t just to check weight and give shots, it’s to listen, to encourage, and to be the steady support you can count on.
Ready to schedule your first visit with us? Give us a call at 770-517-0250 to request an appointment. We can’t wait to meet your newest addition and welcome your family into ours.
Because around here, you’re more than just a patient, you’re part of the Woodstock Pediatrics family.
